Water Safety Requirements
Parents must certify their child’s swimming skills. All students will be given a swimming check-out on the first day of class. This will allow the instructors to check each child’s swimming abilities. The check-out will be with life jackets on and will include:
- Swimming 50 yards unaided.
- Treading water for 1 minute.
Children will also be given a water orientation to learn self-rescue techniques with a sailboat. Failure to complete the swimming check-out will result in the child being dropped from the course without a refund.
Staff
Lead staff members are US Sailing certified instructors. All instructors have received American Red Cross First-Aid and CPR training from the Minnetonka Community Education Department. Our curriculum is developed from the US Sailing Certification Series, the national standard for quality sailing instruction, as well as proprietary LMSS, Inc. teaching systems.
Meals
Students attending classes at Lighthouse Island must bring their own bag lunches. Purified drinking water is available.
Weather Conditions: Calm, High Wind, or Rain Storms
Recreational Sailing classes will not be cancelled due to weather. Indoor and outdoor sailing-related activities are complemented with fun games, educational sailing videos, and activities such as volleyball and swimming.
Race Team classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Cancellations will be communicated in advance via text alert.
Discipline
Behavioral problems will not be tolerated. First time offenders will not be allowed to participate in their chosen activity for an appropriate period of time. Repeat offenders will be expelled.
Boat or Equipment Damage
In the unlikely event of significant damage to boats, sail, spars or other equipment, the responsible student/parent is expected to pay for reasonable repairs.
Refunds
Notice of cancellation must be made at least 30 days prior to the start of the session to receive a refund. There will be no refunds within that time period or after a session begins. Credit Card Processing fees and Active Registration fees are non-refundable at all times. Refunds after May 1, but before the 30-day window, are subject to a $50 cancellation fee.
