Policies
Water Safety Requirements
All students will be given a swimming check on the first day of class, primarily to check that all sailors can safely keep their heads above water if needed. This will allow the instructors to check each child’s swimming abilities. The check will be with life jackets on and will include:
Jumping/sliding into the lake
Swimming/doggy paddling from dock to dock
Children will also be given a water orientation to learn self-rescue techniques with a sailboat. Failure to complete the swimming check-out will result in the child being dropped from the course without a refund.
Meals
Students attending classes at Lighthouse Island must bring their own bag lunches and snacks. Purified drinking water is available. LMSS does not provide meals for sailors.
Weather Conditions: Calm, High Wind, or Rain Storms
Recreational Sailing classes nor Race Teams will not be canceled due to weather. Indoor and outdoor sailing-related activities are complemented with fun games, educational sailing videos, chalk talks, and activities such as volleyball and swimming.
Evening class participants will be notified via email by 2pm the day of the lesson if weather-related cancellation/reschedule is necessary.
Boat or Equipment Damage
In the unlikely event of significant damage to boats, sail, spars or other equipment, the responsible student/parent is expected to pay for reasonable repairs.
Refund
Refunds will be issued up to 45 days prior to the start date of the class less processing fees. Course transfers and reschedules are subject to a $15 administrative fee.
Discipline
Behavioral problems and bullying will not be tolerated. Sailors reaching their third warning may be expelled.
First warning: sailors will have a conversation with their Coach and may be asked to sit out from an activity
Second warning: sailors will have a conversation with the Director and may be asked to sit in the office and miss an activity
Third warning: sailor and Director will call home together
